FRANKLIN STUDENTS PRODUCE WILL-AM DOCUMENTARY
ABOUT C-U SCHOOL DESEGREGATION
Seven African American students from Champaign’s Franklin Middle School explored the history of desegregation and integration in local public schools, producing a 60-minute radio documentary that will air on WILL-AM at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 15, with a repeat at 6 p.m. Monday, May 17.
Our Journey: Stories of School Desegregation and Community in Champaign-Urbana weaves together stories about school, family, church and civic life in Champaign-Urbana as told by African Americans between the ages of 40 and 91. Students producing the documentary, were Tamika Lee, Veronica Martin, Jessica Austin, Deanna Carr, Yakera Barbee, Markisha Motton and Tiera Campbell. WILL’s Kimberlie Kranich, Dave Dickey, Will Patterson and Shawyn Williams helped with the project. The program can also be heard at will.uiuc.edu after it airs.
“Working with the Franklin students, helping them learn a craft and hone their analytical skills while discovering and documenting local history together using radio and the Internet has been a great experience,” Kranich said.
A special WILL-TV Black Perspectives program will look at the making of the radio documentary, featuring a conversation with the students about their experience. In
The Girls of Franklin: A Live Black Perspectives Special, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 6, on WILL-TV, host Imani Bazzell will talk to the students about what they learned about making a radio documentary, the Brown decision and the challenges they face as young African Americans in school today. Viewers are invited call in during the live broadcast to talk with the students and share their own stories. The program will be repeated at 1:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Sunday,
May 9.
The Franklin project was part of WILL’s Beyond Brown initiative remembering the Brown v. Board decision that ended segregation of public schools. The WILL initiative is part of the University of Illinois Brown Jubilee Commemoration.
