Turning Ideas into Action For the last year and a
half, a planning process called "big. small. all." has been
bringing Champaign County residents together to talk about
their dreams and goals for the county's future. Those
dreams and goals have been presented back to the county in
the form of a report called "our future.here." Now,
organizers say the next step is to turn some of those dreams
into reality. AM 580's Jim Meadows reports.

Rather on News, History and Rather At age 75, former
CBS News anchor Dan Rather is still reporting and traveling
around the world. He just came back from Afghanistan
and made his way straight to the University of Illinois,
speaking to hundreds of students at Foellinger Auditorium.
Rather's speech was called "Off the Record," but before that
he spoke exclusively on the record with AM 580 student
reporter Michael Koliska.

A Grammy Winner in Champaign For more than 100 years,
people have had a means to record music. But much of
what was produced in the earliest years of the recording era
isn't readily available,. The motto of Archeophone
Records is "songs you thought were lost forever." The
idea recently struck gold for the Champaign couple who
conceived of the label a few years ago. AM 580's Jeff
Bossert visited with the founders of the Grammy-winning
label.

A New Home, Old Funding Questions The new Champaign
County Nursing Home opens February 28th. But building
a new nursing home was just part of the challenge.
County officials now need to figure out how to operate the
facility without losing money. The Champaign County
Board is studying that issue, meeting with a consultant
hired to show how the nursing home can save money -- and
make money -- while still serving county residents. AM
580's Jim Meadows reports.

Last Dance For the sellout crowd at the Assembly Hall
in Champaign February 21, the big highlight wasn’t Illinois’
victory over Michigan, but the last appearance of Chief
Illiniwek. The Chief has plenty of critics
-- but at the game, supporters showed how much they loved
him. AM 580's Jim Meadows reports.

A Decision on Chief Illiniwek The chair of the University of Illinois
Board of Trustees has retired the tradition of Chief
Illiniwek. The last halftime dance for the Chief will
be Wednesday, February 21st, during the final men's
basketball home game of the season. Larry Eppley says
he is a fan of the Chief, but his decision was in the
university's best interest. AM 580's Jim Meadows
talked to him, along with Ted Land from the student-run
television channel UI-7.

After an Arrest, Anger There were plenty of questions
but not many answers for parents in a meeting at Urbana's
Thomas Paine Elementary School. District 116 officials
held the meeting to hear parents' concerns following the
arrest last week of a teacher on charges he sexually
assaulted children at the school. AM 580's Jim Meadows
reports.

Divided Allegiances The Super Bowl not
only marked the first time the Indianapolis Colts and
Chicago Bears met up in football's championship game, but
the closest-ever proximity between two rival cities. That
resulted in somewhat of a dilemma for fans right in the
middle. AM 580's Jeff Bossert reports from Indiana, along
I-65 -- halfway between two spheres of influence.

Addressing Racial Issues A forum on racial and ethnic
tensions on the University of Illinois campus brought
together top university officials and a student group. The
event was entitled “Racism, Power and Privilege on the UIUC
Campus.” The student group confronted the administration in
the wake of a fraternity/sorority party last fall, in which
students dressed as offensive Mexican stereotypes. But the
“tacos and tequila” party was just part of the discussion.

One Final Cigarette Champaign now
joins Urbana in banning smoking in restaurants and bars. Bar
owners and customers have been the most vocal opponents of
the ban. AM 580's Jim Meadows talked to people at a
Champaign bar as they enjoyed their last legal evening of
smoking while drinking.

A New State Lawmaker Mike Frerichs (left)
leaves the post of Champaign County Auditor to be sworn in
as the next State Senator for Champaign and Vermilion
counties. The Democrat from Gifford won his first term in
November in an open race to succeed Republican 52nd district
Senator Rick Winkel of Urbana. Frerichs sat down with AM
580’s Tom Rogers to talk about education funding reform and
the uncertain future of electricity rates – as the previous
General Assembly is still trying to decide how to respond to
hefty rate hikes that went into effect New Year’s Day.
