  • Thursday, September 29th: First Christian Church of Champaign is leading an effort to organize goods and services for a trip to the Gulf Coast region. Those who would like to donate goods or volunteer their services are encouraged to contact FCC. The trip is set to depart early (5 am) on the morning of September 29th and will return late on October 4th. This trip will need volunteers who are able-bodied workers in the area of construction, demolition, as well as support (cooking meals and handing out supplies to those in need). Any donations can be made at FCC. This is the 2nd of 4 planned service trips to the region.   • Friday, October 7: C-U "Shelter From The Storm" Hurricane Disaster Relief Benefit Concert # 1 - At the Foellinger Auditorium on the University of Illinois Quad, from 7 to 10 p.m., the following performers will appear: Dr. Ian Hobson; The University of Illinois Black Chorus, Dr. Ollie Watts Davis, Conductor; other UIUC Performers (TBA). All proceeds from the event will go to the American Red Cross, Musicares, Habitat for Humanity and the Humane Society. These organizations have been actively responding to the needs of those greatly affected by both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
  • Saturday, October 8th: The traditional Irish music scene in central Illinois will rally to aid New Orleans musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina on Saturday, October 8 in the beer garden at Mike 'n' Molly's, 105 North Market Street, Champaign from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will feature a reunion of C-U favorites Mind the Gap, the band Bloomsday from Bloomington-Normal, and a lineup of other local musicians. All proceeds from the event will go to the Tipitina's Foundation, a
    501c(3) charitable organization formed in 2002 with the mission of uplifting the musical culture of New Orleans. In light of the recent tragedy in New Orleans, the foundation has shifted its current focus to the task at handing of preserving and reconstructing New Orleans' cultural heritage. Its commitment is to provide the New Orleans music community in exile with whatever resources they need to survive, including food, clothing, shelter, instruments, gigs and options for resettlement.     Bruiser & The Virtues; Unfinished Business; Delta Kings; Kilborne Alley; Desafinado; The Painkillers; Jamnation; other bands (TBA). All proceeds from the event will go to the American Red Cross, Musicares, Habitat for Humanity and the Humane Society. These organizations have been actively responding to the needs of those greatly affected by both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
  • Several Champaign-Urbana churches are offering four upcoming work trips to offer hands to the many needs.  Each of these trips will be working with on-site ministries in Gulfport, Biloxi, Baton Rouge, or other locations depending on the team and the regional needs at the time. Work may include food relief, supply handling, clearing brush, home repair, major cleanup, shelter work, and other physical tasks. Teams should expect to be camping in tents overnight.   • Ongoing: The Common Ground Food Co-op is collecting aid to send to Hurricane Katrina victims. They will be sending money to Second Harvest, which is the national network of food banks in the US. Second Harvest is coordinating millions of pounds of food aid which they are trucking down to the areas in need so that people can eat.
    Second Harvest has established a special "Hurricane Katrina" fund and will use 100% of money collected to get food to people in need. They have requested monetary donations to facilitate the transportation of food from food banks and grocery stores across the country down to the areas in need. They have set up a warehouse in the Baton Rouge, LA to act as their Emergency Operations Center and to receive and distribute food.  For more information on Second Harvest's efforts, please see their website www.secondharvest.org or call their Chicago office at 1-800-771-2303 x207.  Common Ground Food Coop is collecting money at the register. If you'd rather donate over the phone or online, please contact Second Harvest directly.
  • Ongoing: Champaign Urbana Public Health District will be collecting supplies needed for hygiene kits for refugees in our community displaced by Hurricane Katrina. So far more than 170 people have made use of the Katrina Evacuee Service Center in the Illinois Terminal in Champaign, and Public Health expects over 250 families to arrive in our community in upcoming weeks needing housing, clothing, and basic care items. Supplies currently needed include: Toothbrushes, Regular sized, toothpaste, ‪Deodorant, Duffel Bags/Backpacks.  We will be collecting these items at our Urbana Office at: C-U Public Health District, 217 N Broadway, Urbana, IL 61801, (217)239-7827, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday.
  • Ongoing: Wesley Foundation and United Methodist Church has set up a the memorial and prayer space for the "victims" of Hurricane Katrina in their sanctuary on the corner of Green and Goodwin in Urbana.  The memorial and prayer space is open to the public from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm.
  • Ongoing: For people in the Champaign-Urbana area, Debby Auble of Ward & Associates, Realtors, is spearheading an effort to send backpacks and school supplies to one of the Houston school districts. Debby has made arrangements to cover the costs of shipping.
    Ward and Associates are located at 8 E. Main St in Champaign. Please contact Debby at 355-1000 for further information.
  • The Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette has compiled a list of agencies  that are accepting donations for relief assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina. See http://www.news-gazette.com/katrinahelp/.
