Description of Supplemental Outreach Intiatives
Participation in Career Days. The WILL Stations joined
the College of Communications at the University of
Illinois in conducting a Communications Career Night at
the Levis Faculty Center on the Urbana campus on February
19, 2004. (Copy of program enclosed; note that the WILL
Stations were not formally listed on the program because
its was not a "presenter.") Representatives of
the Hispanic and African-American student associations
participated in the
career night in an effort to expose as many minority
students as possible to employment opportunities in
journalism.
Sponsorship of Community Event. On an on-going basis,
the WILL Stations work with faculty at University High
School in Urbana, Illinois to develop an oral history
curriculum to train students, including minorities, in the
basics of audio production and journalism. Each year, the
students produce a documentary that is broadcast on WILL
Radio, and a few have chosen to major in journalism at the
college level.
Sponsorship of Community Event. The WILL Stations have
developed a community outreach initiative, designed
specifically to reach young minorities, with assistance
from a member of the faculty at the University of
Illinois. Dr. Will Patterson is coordinator of a weekly
radio program produced by minority women of high school
age. The program focuses on issues of interest to young
minorities and the students learn about basic audio
production and receive instruction in newswriting from
WILL's professional staff. (Audio access to the most
recent production is available at: www.will.uiuc.edu/community/ourjourney/default.htm;
Establishment of Training Program. Station WILL-TV
hires minority trainees, with little or no experience in
television production, and teaches them the rudiments of
camera operation and studio production. The young people
involved in this program are provided with skills that can
qualify them for higher level, full-time, positions in
broadcasting.
Listing of Upper-Level Job Openings. When such openings
occur, the WILL Stations regularly list all full-time job
openings in newsletters and on web sites that reach women
and minorities. Examples include: Women in Communications,
the Urban League, the Chicago Defender, NAB and CPB
jobline (including their minority registries), National
Association of Blacks in Public Broadcasting, Native
American Public Telecommunications, Inc., National Asian
American Telecommunications Association, and American
Women in Radio and Television,
Inc.
